A Selection of Student Work
from Courses I have Taught at USC

Blindspot

Short Documentary Project

This was directed and edited by an Cinema and Media Studies M.A. student, Marquise Mays. The project was a deliverable for the year-long documentary filmmaking course I have taught since 2014. It is open to graduate students from across the university, not only focused on folks with prior filmmaking knowledge.

Wild Web

Video Manifesto Project

This is an example of one of the group-based projects created from a core undergraduate course I have taught since 2020. Students are asked to create a short film that acts as a manifesto around an idea/issue of their choosing. They must draw from visual concepts and manifesto readings discussed throughout the semester.

Kill Bill vol. 1 (recreation)

Visual Narrative Project

This is an example of another group-based exercise from a core undergraduate course I have taught since 2020. Students are asked to select a 2-3 minute scene from film or television and precisely recreate it shot-by-shot. It’s designed to deepen their understanding of visual narrative techniques, while providing them the opportunity to practice their filmmaking skills and techniques.
